Endothermic Generator
Endothermic Gas Generators provides a protective atmosphere for a wide variety of heat treating processes such as hardening, carburizing, carbonitriding and similar processes.
Endothermic gas is created from the proper mixture (air/gas ratio) of natural gas and air and heated through a 1950F alloy retort filled with alundum spheres and nickel-based catalyst. This is commonly referred to “cracking” of the reaction gas followed by quenching of the gas with indirect air or water to freeze the reaction.
Williams provides Endothermic Gas Generators with capacities up to 12,000 CFH. The composition of Endothermic Gas is comprised of 40% Nitrogen, 40% Hydrogen, and 20% Carbon Monoxide.
Williams offers both gas fired and electrically heated systems. For gas fired units, the generator would be equipped with self-igniting burners and flame protection. As an option, Williams can supply offer an optional high efficiency package for the gas fired system including a recuperator for an excellent payback.
In regards to controls, our system includes the SSI “AutoGen” that is very user friendly. The AutoGen is designed to carry out multiple functions for the Generator.
Custom sizes are welcome and available upon request.

- Heating Chamber – Supplies heat through combustion or electric heating elements. The gas fired heating system is offered with recuperation with a quick payback on operating costs.
- Vertical Cylindrical Retorts – Alloy Retorts that house Alundum Spheres and Nickel Based Catalyst to help facilitate the main reaction.
- Air Cooled Heat Exchanger – Expedites the cooling of the Reaction Gas and freezes the composition of the gas prior to entering the furnaces. Optional water cooling is available as well.
- Control System – Allows the operator to easily and safely control each aspect of the process.
